America’s caregiving crisis is growing, with 63 million adults now balancing the complex, often invisible role of providing care to family members or loved ones alongside their regular lives. That’s nearly one in four adults—a staggering 50% increase over the past decade. Today’s caregivers represent all walks of life, from millennials juggling young children and aging parents, to hourly wage workers and people managing full-time jobs on top of their caregiving duties.

The demands placed on caregivers have intensified. Over 40% are now responsible for highly complex care, such as administering medications, operating medical equipment, and managing daily tasks—all with minimal training. Despite the critical nature of their role, only 22% receive any formal instruction before taking on these responsibilities, leaving many to navigate daunting medical and personal challenges alone.

This round-the-clock commitment often comes at a steep price. Half of caregivers report a negative impact on their financial situation, while one in five struggles to afford basic needs like food. On average, caregivers spend over $7,000 a year from their own pockets to support those they care for. The emotional and physical toll is also substantial: a fifth of caregivers say their own health is suffering as a direct result of their duties.

The workplace is not immune to these pressures. Seven in ten caregivers are employed, yet many face disruptions, missed workdays, and little support from employers—especially among the nearly 18 million in hourly jobs who are least likely to have access to caregiving benefits.

Despite the immense value family caregivers bring to society, support systems and policies have failed to keep pace with their growing numbers and needs. As America’s population continues to age, addressing the challenges facing this essential, yet too often overlooked workforce will become even more urgent.
