Sweeping new tariffs announced by the Trump administration are set to reshape the U.S. trade landscape, marking one of the most significant shifts in policy in years. The latest executive order, signed by President Trump, reinstates country-specific tariffs and introduces a new set of rates for nearly 70 trading partners. These tariffs range broadly, from 10% up to 41%, with separate, ongoing duties continuing on imports from major partners like Canada, Mexico, and China.
A notable part of the policy includes a baseline 10% tariff on goods from countries not listed individually in the order. In a particularly pointed move, the administration has imposed a new 25% tariff on imports from India, a direct response to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil, which the U.S. government views as a threat to national security and a circumvention of sanctions.
Imports landing in U.S. ports after August 7 will generally face these new duties, but goods already in transit as of that date will be exempt—provided they are entered for consumption by early October. However, if U.S. Customs and Border Protection determines that goods were rerouted or “transshipped” to skirt these new tariffs, those products will be hit with an even higher penalty rate of 40%, plus additional penalties.
These measures follow months of negotiations and trade deals with major partners, during which some countries agreed to new terms while others did not. The return to aggressive tariffs, after a period of baseline rates, aims to pressure foreign governments to meet U.S. demands on both trade and security fronts. For businesses, this shake-up means carefully monitoring their supply chains and being vigilant about the country of origin for all goods imported into the U.S. As these policies take effect, businesses and consumers alike will be watching closely to see how international suppliers and markets adjust.
